If you found yourself on our blog, without a clue as to what Wabi Cycles actually is, keep reading! Wabi Cycles is a new business, based in downtown Los Angeles. Wabi Cycles was founded by Richard Snook, a bike enthusiast since the 1970s! Richard has had years of experience in the bike world- he helped start the multi-million dollar company Performance Bicycles, did some bicycle consulting work for an Italian bike company, and has now started his own business! Every Wabi bicycle is designed 100% by Richard, and is shipped directly to him. The quality of the bikes is impeccable, and the prices are unbeatable. So, you’re probably wondering where we came up with the name Wabi. Well, Wabi (rhymes with hobby) is a Japanese word that means simple and functional, transcending fad and fashion- the minimalist, “less is more” concept, and captures the essence of the cycling experience. The fixie is a perfect example of the wabi concept- a beautifully simple, elegant, efficient machine. Not sure why someone would choose to ignore the seemingly obvious advantages of multiple gearing? Wabi’s mission is to provide fully thought out, carefully designed, high quality, high value cycling products that add to the enjoyment of whatever type of cycling you do- from practical urban transport to performance oriented training. We started with one of my long-time loves, fixed gears (fixies), and we have several other models, not necessarily fixies, in the works, as well as some accessory items. So stay tuned. In our opinion, details matter- we carefully consider each aspect of a product thoroughly. With decades of experience in the sport and the industry, we have a solid understanding and knowledge of functional and excellent design, we’re a small, nimble, flexible company, and since we work directly with the factories, we can offer tremendous value.
Finally, a little piece of advocacy on our part- Having used bikes for all of these years for daily transportation, we strongly encourage the use of bicycles for commuting whenever possible. In the fight to wean ourselves from oil and its side effects, it all adds up. Cycle commuting might just be the only activity that is healthy, economical, politically correct AND fun all at the same time.
